The history of the Austrian guilder dates back to the times of the Austrian Empire. At that time, the guilder was the currency of the empire and later also of Austria-Hungary.

In 1858, the guilder was introduced in place of the thaler as a result of the Vienna Mint Treaty. The reason for this was that unlike the guilder, the thaler was not calculated using the decimal system. Although the guilder, minted with the portrait of Emperor Franz Joseph, was replaced by the crown in 1882, it was still in circulation in Austria until 1900.
